The Need to Believe and Apply the Bible to our Lives

The Need to Believe and Apply the Bible to our Lives

While studying in the Holy Lands, a professor met a man who claimed to have memorized the Old Testament in Hebrew. Needless to say, the astonished professor asked for a demonstration. A few days later they sat together in the man’s home. “Where shall we begin?” asked the man. “Psalm 1,” replied the professor, who was an avid student of the Psalms. Beginning with Psalm 1:1, the man began to recite from memory, while the professor followed along in his Hebrew Bible. For two hours the man continued word for word without a mistake as the professor sat in stunned silence. When the demonstration was over, the professor discovered something even more astonishing about the man – he was an atheist!

What can we learn from this highly unusual story? The lesson is this: The Bible willnot do us any good unless we believe it and make a sincere application to our lives. I think we would all agree that this is the great need of our society today. Listen to Moses, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children” (Deuteronomy 6:6, 7). James further said, “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves” (James 1:22).

Our society is deceiving itself because it will not believe and apply the Bible. We see this over and over again about homosexuality and same sex marriages with a refusal to even consider what the Bible teaches. We must change our attitude toward God’s word before it is too late.
