In Iowa stands the historic Little Brown Church. Hundreds of weddings take place there each year. I am told that the preacher has adopted a beautiful farewell to the many couples. After the ceremony is over he takes the couple to the entry and says, “Before you go, the bride has the honor of ringing the church bell.” He places the rope in her hands and she pulls with all her might, but the heavy bell will not turn. Then the preacher turns to the groom and asks that he lend a hand and help his bride. Together, they pull and the bell turns, sending out over the countryside the news of another wedding. Then the preacher says, “As you go out into life, never forget that as long as you pull together, you can ring the bell.”
I want to say to every married couple – please keep pulling together! Don’t let the devil use anything in this world to separate you.
The same is true with the church. We must pull together! Paul said, “For we are laborers together with God” (I Corinthian 3:9). He also said in Philippians 1:27, “Only let your conversation (conduct – NKJV) be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: That whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.”
Pulling together makes great marriages and congregations. We must never forget!
