Obligations

Obligations

Our obligations can be summed up in two categories: (1) Obligations to God; and (2) Obligations to others. Our response to our obligations will determine the kind of person we become and where we spend eternity. Let’s look first at our obligations to God. As we study the Bible we see that we have many obligations to God. I want to emphasize six that are very important:

  1. Fear God (Ecclesiastes 12:13; Hebrews 12:28).
  2. Obey God (I Samuel 15:22; Matthew 7:21).
  3. Love God (Matthew 22:37, 38; I John 4:19).
  4. Worship God (Matthew 4:10; John 4: 23, 24).
  5. Serve God (Matthew 4:10; 6:24).
  6. Be a faithful steward of God (I Corinthians 4:2).

These are obligations to God that every one of us should take very seriously. Now let’s look at our second obligations – Those to others. As we study the Bible we see that we also have many obligations to others. I want to emphasize eight that are very important.

  1. Love them (Matthew 22:39; 5:44, 45).
  2. Teach them (Mark 16:15, 16; Ezekiel 33:8, 9).
  3. Practice the Golden Rule (Matthew 7:12).
  4. Obey laws of the land (Roman 13:1-7; I Peter 2:13, 14).
  5. Be peacemakers (Matthew 5:9).
  6. Be truthful (Ephesians 4:25).
  7. Refrain from evil speaking (James 4:11).
  8. Do good to them (Galatians 6:10).

Are we fulfilling our obligations to God and others? Obviously, these are serious matters that we should make our top priority.
